‘DILLA DAY DETROIT’

J. Dilla Tribute Concert Live @ The Fillmore Theater  in Detroit
Friday February 10, 2012

On Friday February 10th, 2012 Detroit will be the epicenter of a worldwide happening to celebrate the life of James ‘J Dilla’ Yancey. Although ‘J Dilla Day’ will be celebrated in over 20 major cities worldwide, only one venue will play host to these events in the hometown of one of the greatest producers in music history. ‘DILLA DAY DETROIT’ will be held at The Fillmore in the heart of downtown Detroit. The event will feature live performances in tribute to the late great producer by local and national hip hop artists.  The event will also serve as a launch party for the Yancey Media Group in the advance promotion of ‘Rebirth of Detroit’, a genre defining record.

James ‘J Dilla’ Yancey succumbed to Lupus in the year 2006 at the age of 32. Within the first 2 weeks of his passing, the Detroit Free Press, Metro Times, Real Detroit Weekly, MTV.com, Source Magazine, Los Angeles Times and countless more publications published articles which hailed his short career of 12 years as one of the most prolific in the history of hip hop. From his work on chart topping singles for Common, D’Angelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Q Tip, Janet Jackson, etc. to his own genre redefining solo releases, J Dilla’s work touched all seven continents, and left an indelible mark on the history of popular music. In 2011, his mother Maureen Yancey (Ma Dukes) assembled a team of industry professionals and native Detroiters to ensure that his legacy in music carries on through positive philanthropic initiatives that focus on youth music programs and scholarship endowments for higher education in the musical arts. To encompass these endeavors, she has commissioned the creation of ‘Rebirth of Detroit’, a recording which features J Dilla’s productions accompanied by Detroit emcees, singers, and musicians in an effort that crosses both racial and generational divisions. The ‘Rebirth of Detroit’ will serve as a flashpoint for signifying the artist community can unify for the common good of both J Dilla’s family, the youth of the Detroit and metropolitan area, as well as his fans worldwide.

The mention of J Dilla’s name in almost any circle of the entertainment business emits both reverence and unwavering respect. This tribute concert will not be short on star power. Hosting the evening will be Academy Award Nominated Actress Taraji P. Henson, with headliners that include Busta Rhymes, Jay Electronica, Phife (A Tribe Called Quest), Phat Kat, Danny Brown (No. 1 Rap Album of 2011/Spin Magazine) and the Nick Speed Orchestra. J Rocc, from the legendary Beat Junkies Crew, will be DJ’ing the event. Also expected to attend include a who’s who in the world’s of popular music, professional sports and ‘A’ list entertainers. In conjunction with worldwide celebrations, Planet.TV will be webcasting The Fillmore concert and showcasing J Dilla birthday events in Sao Paulo, Brazil, London, Tokyo and Melbourne, Australia among the many celebrations throughout the globe.
